Ah, Circleville! How can you not love this little town? If there was some way to hug a town, then Circleville would be it.
Adorable, historical, and fantastical, Circleville hosts the Pumpkin Show every October. I couldn't go this year, but in the years that I have gone, it spares no expense on entertainment, food, and a good time.
But what about the off-season, you ask? Well, it's just as robust without the festival, but you would need to come and see it yourself.
This time, Memory Valley Studios goes to --wait for it--Circleville for The US 23 Skidoo.
Lindsey's Bakery
Heading ever north on US 23, you will eventually come across Circleville, Ohio. But before you can even enter the town proper, you can spot the water tower from the highway painted like a giant pumpkin. As I mentioned, this is the Circleville Pumpkin Show's home; if you have never been, it's a real treat.
Lindsey's Bakery is one of the main go-to's in Circleville, whether you are at the Pumpkin Show or not. Lindsey's is a local treasure to Circleville and boasts some of the best pumpkin donuts you will ever eat. How do I know this to be true? If you have been to the Pumpkin Festival, you see the line for Lindsey's pumpkin donuts can circle the block. I'm not kidding. I've waited in line during the festival for too long to grab a box of these. But here's the thing...you don't need to wait for the festival to get the donuts because these babies are served all year! No waiting in line (Well, maybe a little wait.) and no fighting crowds. You can snatch these classic treats while on your way to work, on a road trip, or need something sweet.
The donuts are fried to a golden brown and glazed to sweet perfection. One bite will definitely have you returning every year for this goodness. The interior is a pumpkin-flavored delight sure to go great with any beverage your heart desires. If you need a pick-me-up, a Starbucks is on the highway. You can stop there before you pick up your donuts. Just sayin'.
Parking is good if you want to go inside and check out their other offerings. It's a bakery, so
the skies are the limit. They have cakes, donuts, cookies, and elephant ears. If I could have, I would have purchased them all, but we only got some donuts and a couple of sugar cookies. Don't want to go inside? Well, good news! They also have a drive-thru.
The sugar cookies are a sweet delight, as well. Buttery, crumbly with that touch of homecooked goodness that can only come from a bakery.
You'll love it here, I promise.
The grand total for six pumpkin donuts, two custard donuts, and two sugar cookies came to a little over $14.00. Not too bad. So when you're here, you won't have to take out a small loan if you decide to load up.
Goodwin's Family Restaurant
Since we were traveling during the morning, I decided to have breakfast on The US 23 Skidoo. The next stop on the MVS list is Goodwin's Familly Restaurant. The restaurant is a little off the beaten path, but it's pretty close to US 23, so it still counts.
I have never been here before, so this was a real treat for me and the family, and I think you'll enjoy it too.
Goodwin's is home-cooking and comfort food at its best. The establishment is a sit-down joint meant to inspire the feeling of eating at home with the family. Cozy, friendly, and charming, Goodwin knows what hospitality and family mean in a restaurant.
I ordered the sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich with a side of hashbrowns from the breakfast menu. The plate came to the table piping hot and smelled terrific. My only problem was that the sandwich was so fresh from the griddle it hurt to pick it up and eat it with my hands, so I resorted to cutting it up with a fork and blowing on it. I had no problem with this since the sandwich was enjoyable and filling. I love a good breakfast sandwich.
But what if you're not interested in breakfast? What if you want lunch for breakfast? Don't worry, you can do that too.
My husband and daughter ordered a cheeseburger for breakfast. My husband, once upon a time, used to work the third shift, and he would come home not interested in breakfast but in lunch because that's what his brain had shifted to with the weird work hours. He thinks this is an excellent idea for those who work the graveyard shift and want a hearty lunch instead of a breakfast.
It is a great idea. So, if you are one of those with the odd work hours, stop here before you go home and grab a cheeseburger for your trouble.
The total for this meal, which included the breakfast sandwich and hashbrowns, hot chocolate, two drinks (unlimited refills), and two cheeseburgers with fries, came to $43.00 without the tip.
Conclusion
Circleville is an adorable little town with plenty to do no matter what time of year you go. Whether during the festival or off-season, you can make your trip worth it when you stop here for food and treats.
