Introduction
Hey everyone! It's been a while since I last spoke to you. The weather in my part of the world has been quite unpredictable lately. One day, it's beautiful with singing birds; the next, it's windy and snowy, making travel difficult. However, we managed to get out for a bit before the next snowstorm hit.
I wanted to get another section of US 23 before the weather turned on us again, and this time, we managed to get a little further up the road. We continued north, again, toward Columbus and crept up on a place that has had my interest for a bit.
I vividly remember passing by this intriguing building during my road trips as a young individual. The place was located just outside Columbus on the High Street/US 23, and I always wanted to explore what it offered. The location was so ideal that you could easily glimpse the bustling city of Columbus while driving on the highway. Over the years, the building has undergone significant renovations. It is now owned by the same group that runs the famous Caeser's Palace in Las Vegas. With their expertise and high standards, one can only imagine the level of luxury and entertainment that this place has to offer.
I'm referring to the Scioto Downs Casino, the next stop on the US 23 Skidoo.
Parking
Parking is free, which is nice since you will be spending a lot of money there, but the parking lot is expansive, so be prepared to walk a bit to get to the main building.
A few years ago, the exterior of the building underwent a stunning renovation, which is apparent from the moment you set your eyes on it. The striking presence of the venue, coupled with its numerous lights, gives off an unmistakable "casino" vibe. While our visit took place during the day, it was still an impressive sight. However, it was easy to imagine that the venue truly shines at night, when the lights come alive, and the atmosphere is nothing short of magical.
Restaurants
Our first stop was to get something to eat before we went to the casino. The main eatery is the Brew Brothers. The fare is an American-style pub, so you'll have the usual suspects: alcohol, fried foods, and sandwiches with copious sides.
As I stepped into the venue, I couldn't help but notice the familiar industrial look of the interior. The stripped ceilings revealed the intricate network of ductwork that crisscrossed above, while the wooden and metal fixtures added to the rustic charm of the place. But what caught my attention was the stunning stage at the back of the venue. Despite the absence of performers, the stage still managed to command attention and exuded an air of grandeur. This is undoubtedly the perfect spot if you love to revel in nighttime entertainment.
We ordered the cheeseburger and the pulled pork and started it off with mozzarella sticks. Sound familiar? If you're curious, this meal was ordered at Ritchie's BBQ in Piketon. Honestly, for the price, it's a hair better than the place in Piketon, but the French fries are to die for. With the crispy exterior and fluffy interior, you would fight for the fries.
The overall price for the meal, including tip, was about $50. So, it's not breaking the bank, but it can be pricey on a budget.
Additionally, as we walked through the casino, some construction was underway. Painted on the wall was the Guy Fieri restaurant coming soon. So I will definitely be looking forward to that. I am a big fan of "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives," so I hope the food will be similar.
Casino
I have never set foot in a legal casino in my entire life. It has always been a matter of interest for me, but I have never tried it for some reason. So, when I found myself standing in one, I was both bewildered and amazed by the spectacular array of lights, sounds, and people around me. Even in the middle of the day, the place was abuzz with activity, and the atmosphere was electrifying.
We walked around the facility attached to Brew Borther's and the hotel. You can walk to either without going outside in poor weather. Regardless, the place is immense and intimidating, especially if you have yet to learn what's happening.
Unable to decide what to do or how to do it, I did the only thing I could think of and asked for help. I wandered until I found the front of the building and saw a couple of security guards standing at the entrance. I approached them and explained that I'd never gambled before and what I needed to do.
She laughed and said, "I've never gambled either." She did her best to explain what she knew, but she was as confident about her instructions as I felt. Finally, she pointed to a desk in the back and said they would see a lot more than she did. I thanked her and walked in the direction she indicated, but I just thought, "I'm gonna go for it."
I sat at a slot machine, wondering whether I should use cash or a Caesar's card. The card earns points that can be used for other items the facility offers. Still, I decided to go with money since this was a one-time experience.
It took me a minute to figure out what was happening, but I played, and it wasn't entirely what I expected. I think of Vegas and high-rollers and shouting, but none of that was happening. It was only slot machines, which is fine with me, but Scioto Downs will surprise those looking to raise the stakes seriously. There is no Blackjack, poker, or any other card game. Slots are the only games of chance that are available.
I lost like 15 bucks, but my hubby made a bit more and walked out with an extra 25 bucks. I mean, it's not a lot, but hey, cash is cash, right?
We went to the cashier to cash in our voucher, and the teller asked my hubby how he wanted the money. I couldn't help but grin - all in nickels, I thought.
We cashed out and left. We stayed about two hours from start to finish. Would I do it again? Sure. It was interesting; I'm armed with more knowledge than when I went in, so I could assess my surroundings better on another visit. But it's something other than what I would seek out.
Conclusion
If you're looking for a fun distraction during your road trip, I recommend visiting Scioto Downs. You can stop in, enjoy a meal at Brews Brothers, and try your luck at the slot machines. However, it's important to gamble responsibly and not be afraid- they're just slot machines. I recommend this to anyone who wants to add excitement to their journey or is looking for a game of chance.
